Start with an honest inspection rather than guessing at the window's age. Look at the corners of the IGU for the faint haze or moisture line that signals seal failure, check the caulk line where the bay window's roof cap meets the main house roof, and press gently on the seat board from inside — if it flexes or feels soft, that's a header or seat board issue that needs attention before it's a bigger structural repair. After any significant hail event, it's worth a visual check even if nothing looks obviously wrong, since seal stress from hail impact doesn't always show up immediately.
On maintenance, plan on resealing exterior caulk joints every 5 to 7 years regardless of frame material — that's the cheapest, most effective thing a homeowner can do to extend a bay or bow window's life in this climate. Wood-frame units need repainting or restaining on a shorter cycle, closer to every 5 to 8 years, to keep moisture out of the joints. And if your home has had any foundation work, or if you know the slab has settled unevenly, it's worth having the bay window's alignment checked at the same time — a window that's been racked out of square by foundation movement will wear its seals and hardware faster no matter how new it is.
When it does come time to replace, this region rewards spending a bit more on frame material and glass package up front. Fiberglass frames and impact-rated or laminated glass options cost more at installation but hold up meaningfully better against hail impact and UV-driven frame degradation than builder-grade vinyl, and that difference shows up as fewer service calls over the next two decades rather than as a number you can pin down exactly in advance.
